Israel vs. Palestine

It’s a topic which has been in the news on and off over the last few years, but the feud between Israel and the surrounding Arab nations has lasted decades longer. Most Israelis and Palestinians favor a “two-state” policy whereby Palestine would become its own independent state alongside Israel. The drawback is that many Israelis residing in the West Bank and Gaza Strip refuse to give up their land to form such a state. The other option is a “single-state” policy where the entire region (Israel, West Bank, Gaza Strip, etc.) would become a bi-national state… supposedly with “equal rights.” If politics has taught us anything, it has to be the fallibility of “equal rights” clauses. No wonder the latter option is less popular. ;-)

As far as my opinion, well, I’ve supported Israel in the past; however, events in the last two years have driven me towards indifference. I don’t know too much about this whole ordeal, so I really want to know your opinions regarding how the issue should be peacefully resolved (or at least mended) for the time being.

Honestly, the solution is for them to grow up and stop bombing each other…I’m so pissed at the medias lack of concern over whats happening there…Honestly speaking, there have been more deaths than the recent mumbai attacks yet that was all over the media….Its really sad!

I think that whichever solution causes less bloodshed is the answer…AND i think the US should stop being so dang biase and support israel blindly..their continuous attacks are WRONG…no questions asked!

The “war” is between them and the hamas..yet all the Hamas leaders are in hiding and the israelites bombing fiasco is killing innocent civilians more than anything…and when that happens, it just pisses me off..

However I am sure Bush and Obama’s support for Israel is encouraging them…AND i think this will backfire on the US (like the bin laden thing did…) but i guess thats another topic…

At one point, its not about politics or boundaries or freedom…its about the fact that innocent ppl are dying, however the media has chosen to either ignore this issue altogether or analyze, both of which are wrong for the time being..

I think the way to resolve this is for the US to step in because apparently Israel is encouraged by them being “allies” to us..

This is the tough decision especially for America. Before people start pointing finger I have to agree that Israel airstrike was inhumane since more than 300 innocent civilians loose they life, among them women and children. But the question is what drove Israel to launch such an attack on Hamas and commit such an unjustified act and the question is while are other nations overlooking this?

The answer can be found if you look at the facts about Hamas. Hamas has been listed as a terrorist network by the European Union, Canada, Australia, Japan, Jordan, and of course Israel. This is due to the fact that Hamas constantly rejected Israel existence and want to destroy to create a Muslim state. However on June 2008 both Hamas and Israel agreed to a temporary truce. This temporary truce ended on December 2008. The reason behind the bombing is due to Israel suspected that there are militant group in Hamas. Obama will indeed support Israel since America had been Pro-Israel since the 1950 and supporting Palestine would seem to be supporting terrorism.

My conclusion I would love to see these two sides called it a truce or a peace agreement. Rizwana I doubt they will grow up become friend and quit killing each other because it a bad world that we live in. I predict that regardless of any President, they would flavor Israel whether they are Republican or Democrat. I sure hope Obama know what he is doing because so far change is already happening since he been elected, change for the worst.

For some reason I feel WWIII is around the corner and I pray to God that I am WRONG

I like how you analyzed the situation fyfy, but right now is NOT the time to analyze! FIRST stop the bombing! and than have peace talks! Because if they dont stop bombing til the talks are done so many people will lose their lives!

Thats what I have about the US govt. they either favor republican or democrats etc….and if they favor you, you can kill whomever you want and the US has “blindfolds” on…

But whatever, what goes around comes around..if not here than in the afterlife..I think the world would be so much better if people analyzed situations regardless of labels “christian, jew, muslim, republican, democrat..” and on a “right or wrong” scenario…but perhaps I am thinking in the Doctor sesne which has instilled in me through moral, religion and choice of career to help save lives first regardless of alliances…

I totally agree Rizwana. In the end, the preservation of human life should be of utmost importance. Heck, I thought politics was needed in the first place to protect our right to live peacefully. Apparently, it’s not.

Einstein said it the best: “I do not know with what weapons World War III will be fought, but World War IV will be fought with sticks and stones.” The human race has the technology to destroy our beloved planet hundreds of times over. Israel and “Palestine” are on the verge of war. Pakistan and India are teetering along annihilation. We have the chaotic Darfur situation in western Sudan. Etc. etc. As a planet, we’re far too engrossed in pursuing violence to resolve our disputes. Makes me miss the days of Mahatma Gandhi, Mother Teresa, and Martin Luther King Jr. :-|

There’s a difference between having support for Palestinians vs. having support for Hamas. Hamas is a TERRORIST ORGANIZATION, that has built tunnels to smuggle in large weapons, but can’t even bring food and medicine? Are you serious?

The blockade was built for a reason. The fact that Hamas uses Palestinians as human shields by shooting from civilian neighborhoods, and then it’s a complete shock to them that Israel finally defends itself. Palestinians need to realize that Hamas is not in their interests. Hamas has said in it;s charter that its goal is to annihilate Israel. Period. And these are people we can “peacefully” negotiate with? Please.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hamas#Controversies

BOTH sides agreed to a 6 month ceasefire. Mahmoud Abbas BEGGED Hamas not to send rockets and break the ceasefire. They didn’t care: http://english.aljazeera.net/news/middleeast/2008/12/2008122813459308175.html

At least Palestinians should be smart enough to vote for the Fatah party rather than Hamas, whose only purpose is destruction of “infidels”.

Ok agreed. But Israel is still in the wrong. At this point they are fighting fire with fire which as we learn soon out of the womb is STUPID…You can’t be upset about Hamas being a terrorist org. killing people and say its ok for Israel to do the same. Killing is Killing. PERIOD.

The thing we have to consider is that innocent people die everyday, regardless of the situation or place on the planet. Hamas are cowards that launch home-made missiles into Israel and when Israel gets pissed and counterattacks, Hamas and Hezbollah hide among the civilians, using them as shields. They are cowards, all of them. Israel has the right to attack, collateral damage, though never good, is a consequence and it doesn’t bother me. Of course, I also don’t live in the area. However, innocents dying is nothing new. If it were up to me, I would nuke Jerusalem, and have neither side claim it. Am I wrong? Was the USA wrong in bombing Hiroshima and Nagasaki to save lives and end WWII? It was not pretty, but goals were met and more lives were saved. We are way passed talking and truces, those religious fanatics will never have peace. A more bold approach needs to be taken. I do feel World War 3 looming in the horizon, and a new world order is eminent. The break down is as follows: Russia, Iran, Pakistan, North Korea, (plus Arab nations), Venezuela vs. USA, Great Britain, France, India, Germany. To win a world war now, you must arm Germany. The stakes a higher, and there will be blood.

Yes, the Hamas are cowards but why should innocent people have to pay the price? Yes, innocent people DIE everyday, but they shouldn’t be KILLED everyday (or for 6 straight days).

Heres one thing that pisses me off about the human of the recent years:

They seem to “relate” more to a situation if its in their home country/ of their nationality.

      Lets take 9/11 for example…

Did we “analyze” why the Bin Laden camp did this? NO…
Did we see that quite obviously the war was between government? NO..

All we saw was innocent people died for no reason..

But now, when this is happening on another country’s soil, and our family members aren’t hurt “who cares” right?

People, please….America is one of the most educated countries..use your noggins. Break out of the box…..Be American, Israeli, Jew, Muslim, Christian etc..later…BE HUMAN FIRST!

To me innocent people dying ANYWHERE is aggravating…To me starting wars and not having peace talks is for any country is aggravating…

But it seems most of our society doesnt give a __________ unless they are being affected.

If a “terrorist” killed someone or planted a bomb people think its the worst thing. If a plain jane who just happened not to take her pills did so people get over it. What the heck is this about? Seriously..

And as far was wars go….(And your predictions about who will side with who for world war III) I find it amusing, and think that America has progressively shifted from its original visions. I think the wisest thing any politician ever said was George Washington when he said not to make allies. You handle your crap, let others handle theirs. Simple. Being peacemaker or the neutral person is a good deed in my eyes. “siding” with someone when they are in a fight, is well, Immature. Lol..

On a side note: with all this “terrorist” talk, innocent people dying, the US trying to protect its citizens etc…I think EVERYONE should watch Eagle Eye. Besides the fact that I love Shia Labeouf (he’s a good actor *cough) I love the message it sends out..

Precisely Rizwana. Of, course I do not want innocent people to die, but what can you or I do to change that? Nothing. Just sulk and say what everyone already knows: Times suck and humanity sucks. That’s it. You could use that energy for something else. I do sympathize and feel sorry about the people dying, but that is what happens in our world. People die. Wars are initiated. Wars end. That is part of life, and the only being that can do something about it is the “man upstairs”. Nature kills more people than man, why don’t we get mad at that? The situation in Gaza needs to be fixed now, it needs a permanent fix, not a band-aid. I am being human first. You do need allies, you cannot fight “evil” on you own. Doesn’t a surgeon have a team of “allies” during surgery? Or does he cut into the cerebral cortex by himself? I personally don’t like George Washington, the guy lost every battle he was in, except for the final and decisive battle, in which he got lucky. But, I do agree in that military alliances create tensions, hence, The Great War or World War I. I don’t want you to think that I am a cold individual. It is just that I know the futility. Herodotus of Halicarnassus said it best: “Nobody is fool enough to prefer war over peace. In peace, sons bury fathers. In war, fathers bury sons.”

I hate wars, but when you review history all peace are made from them. It seem that war solve all problem and that is the problem. The Civil war solve the problem of slavery and the revolutionary was solve the problem of America independence from England. Many country gain their freedom from war America and Mexico. Wouldn’t you agree Oscar. Yet as much as we hate war the people who fought and them became our hero.

I guess what I am trying to said is since the beginning of time man can only find freedom if he go to war. I think the saying applied if you want freedom you fight for it. It is sad that thousand have to died in order for us the agreed as if we can agreed beforehand.

Many people suggested the reason why Israel lauch such an attack is that they are Muslim extremeist hiding among Hamas. As I said before Hamas is targeted by most of Europe , CHina and Japan as having terrorist network.

UTSWstud, you are 100% right not only that, Hamas has also been target by the European Union and Japan for having brutal war crimes. One of Palestine biggest mistake is that they voted for Hamas instead of Fatah in the 2006 election with 76 to 42. Unlike Fatah Hamas had strong anti-Semite views and believe that Israel should be converted to Islam or died. In the Hamas document suggested that before the 2029 Israel will be destroy and become an Islamic state

I just think Israel motto is Get them before they get us. I can see WWIII looming. on our side: Great Britian, India, Israel and the enemies Pakistan, Iran, Palestine.

Is Israel or is it palestine. Majority of people I know will said Israel. As for my motto War is not about who is right but who is left

By the way the reason why all the politician supported Israel is base on three things.

    1) Israel finally got they land in 1946. For year the Israeli were rejected from everywhere they go since the beginning of biblical times. They should have a land of they own.

    2) It does not take a genius to realize that the Jew control most of the economy. They are top doctors and lawyers

    3) The Jew were God chosen people regardless of what people might say. Ever sine the beginning of time God made covenant with Abraham. And most of all the since America is Christian there worship Jesus and Jesus was a Jew.

So basically if I can remember from my International relation class is that America will stand for Israel and standing for Israel is standing for God children

    Gentlemen,
No not at all . What Israel has done is totally unfair. And i do not know why these Arabs did not
came together and show the world their unity. First and formost thing is that be united.”unity is strength” Isrel is having all support from the America and the Super power countries. To compete
with Israel means not only Israel, They have to be very strong then only we can go for this war again
    to take the revenge.

I don’t think this should be viewed as a “war” between Israel and Palestine, per se. If you’re going to stick your hand into a hornet’s nest, be prepared to get stung. Israel has shown a tremendous amount of patience towards Hamas’ routine intrusions. If you ask me, it’s about time Israel flexed its power in retaliation. Also, I find it interesting that over the last few years, whenever Hamas (Palestine) launched an attack against the Israelis, it received relatively little media coverage. But the second Israel, a tiny yet powerful country with even more powerful allies, decides to use its superior weaponry against Hamas, Israel is held as the bad guy. Yes, it’s honestly a terrible fact of war that civilians will suffer the same consequences as the perpetrators, but Israeli civilians were lost at the same cost.

Ejaz, I’m afraid what you’re advocating is one of the possible scenarios to engage in a full blown World War III. :-|

WW III will be fought regardless and unfortunately, and trust me, it will originate with those extremists who want the destruction of the infidels and full Jihad. “What Israel has done is totally unfair. And i do not know why these Arabs did not came together and show the world their unity.” You can argue that what Hamas has done is what is truly unfair. Either you need to go to TSO or get your facts straight, or both. Come on, Israel Intelligence shows that Hamas launch missiles from a certain place, and then Israel sends rockets there, and “oh, the horror, it was a children’s school.” Was that Israel’s fault? No. Hamas are the ones to blame for launching homemade missiles from that school. I SAW the satellite images for crying out loud. Please. The Arab nations will not unite because they love American dollars buying their oil, nobody wants to fight someone bigger and better, just inflict cheap shots and run.

Rishi, do you think mankind will ever reach a level of happiness and formal reasoning in which religion will no longer be needed? I yearn for that day, maybe thousands of years in the future? I will tell you this, the Bible, the Quran and other holy scriptures have caused the bloodshed and death of hundreds of millions of people throughout human history. We are still a stupid and primitive people. The day wars end, it is the day humanity reaches a new level of awareness.

Unfortunately, it’s a virtual impossibility for mankind to reach the level you describe. Aside from strife originating in religious differences, human nature is rather pathetic. As a society, the overwhelming majority of us are more preoccupied with being “better than the next guy”, though we may showcase otherwise. Humility should be taken at face value, for there are very few humanitarians/philanthropists in history who had an unconditional interest for their fellow man’s well being. As long as there’s a “rebel” in all of us, there will never be a utopic society. :-(
