The other day I was driving down our beloved Highway 6 and saw a massive plume of smoke rising from a neighborhood to my left. I slowed down to a dangerous speed and rubbernecked my eyeballs out. The sight struck me dumb as I slowly weaved in and out of my lane. I wondered why the fire had gotten to such a great size and why I heard no sirens and saw no firetrucks. I decided it might be a good idea to call for help just in case no one else had. It turns out that the fire had not been reported. Within two minutes after my phone call, tops, I heard sirens. I can only imagine that a phone call from a concerned rubbernecker a few minutes earlier would have saved much grief and heartache, but people are just too decent to be nosy these days. I guess it’s just another example of how the masses can be so incredibly ignorant together.

=) Hi Rishi! I miss seeing and chatting with you. Why have you left me to be an insomniac all by my lonesome? We should catch up =) Your rants intrigue me to no end. =) Oh, and I mean this post with all politeness and sincerity. =) (Hm, there are a lot of smileys in here =) )

Most everyone loves a train wreck. The chance to see a brush with death without actually having to go through it ourselves. It's too good not to look. But rubberneckers give us "quick glancers" a bad name. I'll briefly glance over at an accident but rubberneckers actually glare and slow down to a crawl. And they defend their speed with "well, I wanted to go slow so I didn't crash myself".

You can also blame news programs for making us enthralled with the morbid. It's pretty much all they cover.
