How To Flash Samsung Omnia i910 ROM

Over the last few weeks, I’ve gotten into the world of modifying stock Windows Mobile ROMs to include/exclude programs which typical users need. For example, who really needs the business card reader program common to Windows Mobile platforms? Why not remove it to save on some valuable storage space? That’s exactly the aim of the art of “cooking ROMs.” Here’s how you go about installing new ROMs on a Samsung Omnia smartphone.
Keep in mind that flashing a ROM will erase most things which aren’t on your storage card (programs, system settings, etc.) Follow these steps using a Windows XP box which has ActiveSync installed:
- Set ActiveSync to “not allow USB connections” on your computer.
- On the Omnia, go to Settings -> Connections -> USB Connection, and toggle “Mass Storage” as the USB function. Then turn your phone off (hold down the power button) and plug it into the computer.
- Open the UMDL program you downloaded earlier.
- Select “Unified Image File (*img) on the left column and search for the CF03 ROM you downloaded earlier.
- Select “Detect” in the lower left part of the UMDL program, and then turn your phone on. Cross your fingers. A dialog box in the bottom left should say that a PDA device was detected. The ROM will automatically be uploaded to the phone, and upon finishing, the Omnia will restart. Don’t bother restoring your system preferences at this point.
- Choose one of the third party ROMs available for the Samsung Omnia i910 (remember, i900 ROMs are not compatible with the i910). I use Blazingwolf’s WM 6.5 ROM.
- Simply turn your Omnia off and connect it to the computer, download the ROM file, open up the UMDL software, click on “PDA” at the top left (instead of unified image loader as you did earlier), navigate to the ROM’s location, click on “Detect” on the bottom left, and turn the Omnia back on. Just as before, the ROM will automatically upload itself and the phone will restart upon completion.
- Before reconfiguring your phone’s settings, go to Start -> Settings -> Personal -> Phone -> Services Tab -> Highlight GPS and click “Change Settings” -> Toggle “Location On”
- Next, dial *228 and hit option 1. This will reprogram the phone. Then dial *228 again and hit option 2 to update the preferred roaming list.
- Enjoy adding applications, themes, and whatever else you want.

Thanks for those very detailed instructions. Everything worked out until I got to #6. I can’t seem to find the wozzer’s wm6.5 “naked” version 0.4 ROM download. Also, where can I find that very cool looking Today Screen?
Thanks again.
Gerry

The reason you couldn’t find it is because it’s now version 0.5.
The Today Screen you see in the image above is actually the default for Windows Mobile 6.5, so you’ll see it as soon as you flash to the new ROM.

Wow! That’s much better. Thanks for quick reply. I’m sure I’ll be up late into the night figuring out all the new features of the OS.
Thank you again…

I love the new O/S but I can’t get the Titanium Weather panel to work. I tried uninstalling so I can re-install but not able to uninstall.
HELP!

Hey Gerry,
It’s funny that you posted this, because just yesterday, I flashed to an entirely different ROM – blazingwolf’s custom i910. Wozzer’s ROM is great, but I had some issues (for example, during a phone call, the phone wouldn’t automatically lock). Blazingwolf’s ROM does an excellent job of resolving the bugs, and I’ve enjoyed customizing it. Titanium also works nicely. Go ahead and try it for yourself. The flashing process is the exact same!

Thanks for all this information. Bought my cell last November and have been a little disappointed until now. Followed your instructions and eveything worked well. I actually tried three ROMS – WoZZer’s naked and stock – then blazingwolf you suggested. Ended keeping the blazingwolf – primarily because of Titanium Weather .
Thanks again….
Good luck in Med School – my daughter just finished her peds residency.

Verizon has released a new ROM for the i910 Omnia. Be sure to follow the link to upgrade to the latest version before flashing your favorite cooked ROM.

Hi I have a Samsung Omnia and I live in Australia. The phone has Optus software on it that is stopping me from going to the web as my phone provider is a different company called Telstra. Is this flashing thing you are doing going to help me fix this problem? I like the way my phone is set up already so am I going to loose all of my programs and setting that are install onto the phone. I have windows 6.1 mobile on the phone and really only the programs like GPS Navagation on the phone that came with it. Before i attempted to do this it would be nice to be knowing what the phone will be like at the end. My phone model is Samsung Omnia i900

Phillip

Hey Phillip! I’ve actually never heard of software which blocks people from going to the web (at least not with Verizon who requires Omnia i910 customers to purchase the data plan). Flashing to a new ROM will wipe out everything on your phone, so it’s wise to make a backup if you decide to go this route. These custom ROMs have a lot of the default programs removed which most people don’t use to help free up some storage space and provide better overall performance. Personally, the only things I use on my Omnia are Google Maps, YouTube, Skyfire, ActiveSync, and the FM Radio (all of which are free apps or native to Windows Mobile). If you’re even a little skeptical, don’t flash to a new ROM. Thanks for the comment!

Hi, thank you very much for the step by step that you gave us, but everything worked out really good until I got to #5… I can’t make it detect my phone! what should I do?
thank you.

Have you successfully synced your phone using ActiveSync before flashing the new ROM?
Published: 7 months, 2 weeks ago
Yes!! I could synced before and anytime now…

You’re using a 32-bit version of Windows XP, right? If so, then I really have no idea what could be wrong.
This method has worked for many others, so I apologize for the technical difficulties you’re experiencing.

I am thinking of flashing my Omnia and I was wondering what new things are added and what other things are gotten rid of? Also is there a way to restore the phone to version 6.1 if i dont like 6.5? Lastly will I be able to do this with Vista x64? thanks a lot
Published: 7 months, 1 week ago
If you browse through the Modaco forum dealing with i910 ROMs, most of the “chefs” compile a list of the things that they have added/removed as their first post. For example, BlazingWolf’s Night ROM is what I use, and he has a detailed changelog and list of things added/removed for his ROM.
You can definitely flash back to 6.1. Just find a custom ROM based on WM 6.1.
As for running the UMDL software on Vista x64, well, I’ve honestly never tried it. The support forums I’ve read through all used XP, so I did too. I didn’t want to risk frying my phone in the middle of a flash because of some OS-related problem.
Hope this helps!

umdl works fine with vista x64

UMDL also works fine on Windows 7, X64.

If you want to see a wide array of chefs available you can visit http://www.omniaroms.com there is a thread that tells you how to cook your own rom and make so many more customizations…
See ya there

thanks for the help. flashed my omnia with no problums, but i do have a question, i fashed to cc20 not cf03, can i use cf03 roms?
Published: 7 months, 1 week ago
You should definitely flash to CF03. The cooked ROMs are just writing the “PDA” portion of the firmware, but the CF03 is an update to the whole software backbone. Without it, you won’t be able to take advantage of features like aGPS… even with a cooked ROM. Hope this helps!

I just flashed to CF03 firmware and then used Blazingwolf’s ROM, but where on the phone and I see the CF03 firm where? also what did the CF03 firmware fix or add to the phone?
Published: 7 months ago
The firmware doesn’t have many visual differences from the previous ROM (that I am aware of). As far as additions, I’m aware of the big one – unlocked GPS. Search on Google to find out more about the changes associated with the Verizon CF03 ROM for the Omnia. Wish I could’ve been more of a help, but I really never looked into the changelog.

i downloaded all the files except the blazingwolf’s custom i910 or for that matter any cooked rom. when i click the link, i am confused since there is no download for it. also, which is newer, CF03 or CC20? lastly, will there be a problem if my pc has USB 1.1 ports only to perform the flash? thanks…
Published: 6 months, 2 weeks ago
USB 1.1 will just take longer, and the CF03 ROM is the latest version.
Published: 6 months, 2 weeks ago
by the way, what is MS3? do i need it or just the Blazingwolf’s WM 6.5 ROM which is the Night 1.4? seems like the blazingwolf’s custom i910 is for CC20. sorry for these questions. it will be my first time to flash. by the way, is there a problem using Vista instead of XP? i know it’s not activesync for vista though.
Published: 6 months, 2 weeks ago
I’m not 100% sure that it’ll work on Vista, but you’re welcome to search the Modaco forums for a better solution pertaining to your system. MS3 is SPB Mobile Shell 3. You should search Google to learn more about it, but if you do download the MS3 version, you’ll need to purchase a key from SPB or else the interface will expire after fifteen days.
Published: 6 months, 2 weeks ago
thanks for the reply. i guess i don’t really need MS3 then. by the way on your instructions above you said to upgrade to CF03 but yet below that on the procedures, here is what it said: # Open the UMDL program you downloaded earlier.
# Select “Unified Image File (*img) on the left column and search for the CC20 ROM you downloaded earlier.
search for CC20 or CF03?
i guess if i ended up with using an XP machine, i would have to have USB 2.0? so the Night 1.4 version is a good one?
thanks again.

I started the upload and installation of the CF03 and after 35 minutes it seem that the PC was stuck. I unfortunately pulled the cable and then tried to restart the Omnia i910. Now the screen is black with the words Samsung OMNIA on it and its not going to the splash screens. Any ideas? Is there a way to do a hard reset?
Thanks in advance. I will check this forum often.

I’m sorry that happened. I recommend searching the Modaco forums and asking the experts over there. This post is just my experience with flashing new ROMs to the Omnia i910… not a support forum.
Published: 5 months, 3 weeks ago
No Forane, you bricked that one. If it has not been a year since you got it take it back to verizon store and tell em it just quit working on ya. YOU MUST NOT INTERRUPT THE PROCESS WHEN FLASHING! IT WILL DESTROY YOUR PHONE!

Does the mouse work with this rom…..is there anything (as far as functions go) that don’t work that did work with the original 6.1?
Published: 2 months, 2 weeks ago
Its been months since I’ve had the Omnia, but if I remember correctly, BlazingWolf’s ROM was compatible with all the hardware.

I am not sure if ones come here to check the post anymore, but thought I’d give it a shot. I recently picked up an Omnia i910 pretty cheap. I would like to flash it as I have done so on all my HTC phones. The main forum to do so seems to be Modaco.com. However, for some reason I can never connect to that site, been trying for 4 days now.
Is there another site to get roms for the i910?
Thanks,

Hello and thank you for all the information you posted, it is very nice of you considering how much they are charging to do something like this. I wanted to know if this kind of flashing allows you to change the phone to another company? I am trying to change my Samsung Omnia i910 from Verizon to my current company, MetroPCS. Thank you for your help.

Hello Liz! You may want to browse through the forums at Modaco. Its been quite some time since I’ve perused through that forum and actually used an Omnia, so I’m sure they have more updated information than I could provide. Thanks for the comment!
