Miranda Rights and Detainees

Let’s consider our global situation. Many factions across the globe hate America, what it stands for, and what it’s currently doing in terms of foreign affairs. When these same factions are being given the privileges and “rights” of Americans, well, something just seems amiss to me.

Should detainees be read the Miranda rights?

Why are we enforcing our legal process on these terrorists who openly express their desire to destroy America? My view is simple – treat them like terrorists. Politics is ridden with countries trying to make themselves look good in the grand scheme of things, but every now and again, I feel that the primordial “eye for an eye” sentiment should be applied. I know that it’s not advantageous in the long run, but come on. It’s not like we’re trying to make friends with them or soften up how we handle their threats. We should be showing the world what happens to people who threaten the peace and security of another nation.

This latest stunt, among other things, has Republicans and terrorism analysts worried. :-|

Brad left me a Facebook comment regarding this post which speaks my mind:

There is a specific national security-related reason why we keep enemy combatants in Guantanimo Bay, & this is it. They are not U.S. citizens – they are enemy combatants. You cannot treat enemy combatants like common criminals. This is war. How much more does it take to understand that? War is war, nor more no less. I ask the question, with this due process being given to these pieces of excrement, who are are going to use for “witnesses”? Notice how it says, “You have the right to remain silent”. Now we just told the terrorist that he has the “right” to not give us any information we need to stop further attacks to kill thousands of more Americans. By doing this they have conferred Constitutional rights to enemies of the Constitution, thus the United States. This has never been done before in American history, & it is going to have serious consequences. Just know that if we are attacked, that blood is going to be on Obama’s hands. Hope & change baby!! (sarcasm added)

Yes, I’m sure Brad feels the same way about those Chinese Uygurs who did nothing at all whatsoever. Right? Oh wait, they’re expendable collateral – Oops we were wrong! Oh well.

Also with respect to Miranda rights – um actually IT HAS been done in history – the bombers of the WTC in 1993 under Clinton who still are in jail. I’m glad that people like Brad and Dick Cheney are praying for America to be attacked just to score political points. That must be the compassionate conservatism we hear so much about. Republicans seem to only be able to rule under fear. It makes them no different than dictators like Ahmedinejad. Also just curious, if an attack occurs on Obama’s watch it is his fault, so is it safe to say that when 9/11 happened on Bush’s watch, it was his fault? Oh, wait, that’s CLINTON’S fault even though he was out of office for 9 months.

As far as “Many factions across the globe hate America, what it stands for, and what it’s currently doing in terms of foreign affairs.” — This cowboy mentality mantra repeated by the Bush administration is ridiculous. It’s not just “factions” that hate America, it’s entire countries and it is BECAUSE of our disastrous foreign policy under GWB. The embracing by the prior administration of rabid neoconservatism and meddling in Middle Eastern affairs when we are neither asked or wanted (excluding Afghanistan – where we should have been) – is why it has been a failure. It’s a CIA term called “blowback” – Ron Paul delineates this quite well. In general however, most people WANT America to succeed and they know deep down America is the beacon of civil rights in the world.

The difference between us and the terrorists is that we aren’t supposed to act like the terrorists. If we do, we are NO BETTER, and we have no business then LECTURING other countries to change their tactics.
