Season of Sacrifice – Lent

Many of my friends are partaking in this season of “fasting” where Christians give up facets up their life which they’ve deemed addictive. As a non-Christian, I can only wonder how many revert back to their old lifestyle as soon as the forty day Lent period is over, but for those who manage to continue on without the need of those materialistic attachments, the highest of praise should go out to you.

What type of item did you or would you give up for Lent?

Furthermore, I’m left in a state of contemplation amidst the sacrifices of my peers. Which items in my life am I hopelessly addicted to? Well, for better or worse, I can only think of one – the Internet. As for giving up the Internet, I really don’t see a point. It’s my primary means of earning money, educating myself, gaming, entertainment and communication. It’s a crucial part of my daily routine as it provides me with essentials that other mainstream items (televisions, phones, etc.) cannot.

Every time I go out of town, I usually have to abandon the Internet for a few days, and let me tell you… I feel like I’m back in the Dark Ages. I’m totally out of touch with the world and oblivious to recent events. The first thing I do when I get home is run to my laptop, check my e-mail, check AIM, check Facebook, check Google News, check PubMed… ehhh… you get the point.

So what would you give up for Lent?

Totally agree with you about the whole internet thing. My life career pretty much depends on the internet. GIVE ME INTERNET OR GIVE ME DEATH!

Initially, I decided to give up fried foods and to work out everyday. But that failed pretty quick. I guess I’ll try again next year.

I can not give up the internet since my life and my future career depend on it too. I decided to give up something that is personal and hoping I will find something that God meant for me. I got a good topic for your next blog, global warming and Al gore

    I gave nothing up. =)

I am addicted to the Internet as well, and Facebook is worse than crack (not that I have tried it). I DO respect people who give up something addictive for lent, as they are spurred by religion reasons I could never fathom. My hat goes out to them. It is nice to have some time away from technology, however. We are very, very spoiled in this age and day. For your next topic, how about the “God” gene? How human beings are predisposed to believe in a deity based on our DNA code. It is our nature to want to believe in something. Know what am sayin?!

Haha, so I guess it’s unanimous – the Internet isn’t feasible to “give up.” :-D
