Texas Medical Center in Shambles

Growing up, I thought that aspiring to be a doctor in Houston, Texas would be the equivalent of pursuing petroleum engineering in Kuwait or technology in Silicon Valley. Amidst the world’s largest medical center, there are fantastic institutions which were thriving on a yearly basis with continued expansion on the horizon. Never did I think that when I finally got around to starting medical school, money and politics would take their toll on the overall success of the Texas Medical Center (TMC).
Baylor College of Medicine, my beloved institution of medical training, is out of money with an incomplete teaching hospital and shattered relations with prestigious hospitals like Methodist. Recently I was informed that M.D. Anderson Cancer Institute, the nation’s leading cancer treatment facility, is in a similar financial situation. Furthermore, Rice University is playing “hard to get” with the upper hand they hold in negotiating a Rice-Baylor Med merger. Etc. etc.
I just hope that over the next four years, a sense of unity is established among the TMC giants. These institutions are in too good of a venue to pass up on collaboration regardless of how bitter negotiations were over the last few years.

I think things are tenuous but will work out. Methodist and Baylor are like the split up couple that want to get back together but only through a marriage counselor (Rice). Both Baylor and Methodist have willingly given the upperhand to Rice (Baylor bc of financial reasons unlike Rice which is doing just fine financially, Methodist bc they don’t want to talk directly to Baylor).
I don’t think Rice is taking advantage though. I think they’re being careful as they don’t want to merge with Baylor and then have Baylor think it can call the shots on everything like it always tries to do, and actually tried to do with Methodist and lost.

That’s true man! I hope the changes in BCM’s administration will convey the image of a “clean slate”, per se.
