Today was the second session of Space Medicine, the only elective I’m taking this block. Growing up, my father never pushed me towards any particular field of science except one – astronomy. In fact, thanks to him, I was probably the only 1st grader who owned the entire library of Isaac Asimov’s space-related articles, videos, […]

The term “muscle memory” is often used to describe how athletes can perform a task with incredible consistency. Think about shooting a free throw in basketball. No matter where you play, the free throw is constant – 15 feet away from a 10 foot tall basket with no obstructions. So what accounts for the difference […]

A fantastic video showcasing the assembly process of the SLR – an automotive masterpiece by Mercedes Benz and McLaren.
If there’s one thing I’ve discovered this weekend between blocks 4 and 5, it’s the stark contrast between life inside and outside of medical school. It got me thinking… there are some things which medical students grow fond of in school, but when its taken away, there’s a noticeable impact.

You’re done with your first semester of medical school. Grades could be better… CV is pretty empty… still uneasy about the future… and you’re missing the days when you were easily at the top of your class. The dream of going to medical school has now become a daily burden. The noble act of caring […]

Something valuable I learned in block 4 dispelled a myth I heard throughout my childhood years – you can’t sneeze with your eyelids open or else your eyeballs will pop out.
Farewell, My Dear Cadaver

Tuesday (February 16th) was the last day of anatomy lab. Four blocks… over six months of growing as a medical student with the same specimen… and the journey is at en end.
This past exam week has been a marathon of sleepless nights culminating in a full session of “12 hours” from Wednesday night into Thursday morning. After the block party last night, I had been awake for 47 hours and was breathing hard just to get to my car… right across the street.
Baylor Med Emergency Medicine Residency

My flawed logic going into medical school regarding emergency medicine was something along the following lines: take a top 20 medical school in Baylor College of Medicine, physically connect it to a top notch level 1 trauma center which sees over 100,000 patients a year, and you’ve got one of the best emergency medicine residency […]

In her last embryology lecture, the pediatric surgeon who has shown us the wonders of development (and things that can go wrong) over the last four blocks concluded her lecture as always – providing useful tips to survive medical school. One of the points she made this past week really hit home… almost as if […]
