Beginning of Block 8b

So today is the first day of another block, and in true fashion, I skipped the lectures. It’s interesting reading my classmates’ Facebook and Google Talk status updates regarding how boring certain lectures are from the comfort of my home. Makes me glad that I only have to endure them for 2.5 less the time […]
After the neonate exam session I had Wednesday afternoon, I had a pediatric one on Thursday at Texas Children’s and a genitourinary session yesterday morning at the Baylor Clinic – both of which were incredible experiences too.
As part of our Patient, Physician and Society (PPS) course this block, we’re required to attend several “special sessions” at hospitals around the Texas Medical Center. Today I had my neonatal session at Ben Taub and was absolutely blown away by how wonderful the world of neonatology is. Plus… who doesn’t love babies?!
With the conclusion of block 7b, I’ve learned a great deal about pulmonary and renal pathophysiology. Or at least I hope I did. Hmmm… I miss the days of grade school where all we had to know was that lungs were involved in breathing and kidneys made urine. Oh yeah, and that we had two […]

Baylor College of Medicine (BCM) is one of the few schools which has an “accelerated” basic sciences curriculum. Finishing this portion medical school in eighteen months (rather than the traditional two years) gives BCM students an additional six months to master their clinical skills on the wards. However, several interviewees and prospective students alike have […]

One week into block 7b and it’s already 1/3rd done. After a couple of back-to-back two month blocks (5 and 6), I’m enjoying this fast-paced curriculum even more. The MS1s have their first real exam tomorrow. They’ve all been studying really hard, so I’m sure they’ll do great!
Rainy Beginning to Block 7b

Today was one of those “I don’t have any classes in the afternoon, so I’m going to stream lectures instead” days. The heavy downpour from the outer bands of tropical storm Hermine gave me even more of an incentive to avoid the roads and stay at home. I enjoyed finishing a six hour day (four […]
In retrospect, yesterday was one of the longest days I’ve had this year. I slept a total of fifteen minutes the night before trying to cram as many last-minute details as possible for the hematology/oncology exam, but the hard part was trying to buy time from after the exam till one of the end-of-block parties. […]
