One of the coolest things I’ve seen on the wards happened yesterday in the operating room. On my first day of benign surgical gynecology, I saw three laparoscopic procedures – a hysterectomy, a bilateral tubal ligation, and a bilateral ovarian dermoid cystectomy. While all of them were new experiences, it’s the cystectomy which totally blew […]

Saturday morning marked the end of my week on gynecological oncology (“gyn-onc”). A colleague and I came in for morning rounds, got to leave by 10:30am, and I spent the rest of the day pseudo-studying.

On account of today being the earliest I’ve woken up since starting my rotations in January, I’ll write this post in segments throughout the day.

In the course of pregnancy, sometimes it becomes necessary to deliver a baby prior to the mother going into spontaneous labor. Indications for induction of labor (IOL) can include suspected fetal compromise, pregnancy-induced hypertension (PIH), premature rupture of membranes (PROM), and chorioamnionitis.

Oh my gosh, the hours are so long. My attending yelled at me! I have to work a full 12 hour shift! And God forbid, back-to-back 12 hour shifts… including a weekend day?! Why am I here? I’m getting pretty tired of how melodramatic some medical students can be about our responsibilities. Try to consider what […]

Having been the lucky OB student to get the last call night of the month, I stumbled out of the labor and delivery (L&D) wing and went straight down to McDonald’s to fuel myself with caffeine for the long commute home. I had finished obstetrics – a month that was filled with learning about a […]

Yesterday was my last shift of L&D, and it was an eventful week indeed. Waking up at 4 AM and getting home around 7:30 pm limited my exposure to… the sun… but hopefully I’ll be able to reset my internal clock over the weekend.

Well I’m back on the labor and delivery (L&D) service working from 6am to 6pm+ delivering babies, scrubbing in on C-sections and tubal ligations, talking to patients in labor, assessing fetal health in utero, etc. Gyn consult was fun last week, but I’m ecstatic to be back in the operating room. This evening, I had […]

OB Intake is basically the “obstetric emergency room.” If patients are over a certain point in their pregnancy (late 1st trimester, or 2nd/3rd trimester), they’re moved from the main ER to be triaged by OB Intake. After being worked up, patients are typically sent to one of three places: 1.) home, 2.) L&D or 3.) […]
