Today marked the official “first day” of this family trip to Hawaii, and we decided to rent a car to go around the island of Oahu. We passed by the infamous Pearl Harbor and decided to take a train-guided tour of the Dole Plantation – really fun and informative. Did you know that there are […]

I just got back from an appointment with my pediatrician to get my meningitis, hepatitis A, and tetanus booster immunizations for medical school. Before a nurse administered the injections, she took some information to update my file:

Just under three months left before Baylor College of Medicine’s mandatory orientation, and I’m beginning to feel a rush of denial overcoming me. This past year was supposed to be my “last hurrah” before beginning a journey with no foreseeable end. After so many months of waking up late, washing lots of dishes, reading exactly […]

The final chapter of How Doctors Think by Dr. Groopman deals with the experiences of the author (an oncologist by training) and his colleagues as they diagnose and treat cancer patients. This was of special interest to me since I’m considering hematology/oncology as a possible career. The author explains the nuances of dealing with terminal […]

In the latest chapter of How Doctors Think, the author disclosed his years of struggling with a hand problem which no specialist seemed to properly diagnose. He visited four hand surgeons in the course of several years, and each seemed to provide a unique approach in resolving the author’s ailment. For a single problem, there […]

“How Doctors Think is a window into the mind of the physician and an insightful examination of the all-important relationship between doctors and their patients.” This is an excerpt from the back cover of the book, and after reading the first two chapters, I can attest to its validity. Several anecdotes are given by the […]

Those closest to me know that I’m not a reader. Not even close. In fact, I can’t even remember the last novel I read for school, and as far as outside reading goes, it’s literally nonexistent. I’m just not the type of person who can sit down with a book and read for pleasure without constantly […]
In Memory of John Vay

I remember when I first saw John Vay. It was before I even started summer-school prior to my freshman year at HBU. I was in the bookstore (in the MD Anderson at that time), and I noted a rather loud Asian guy outside. As I waited in line to purchase my textbooks, I saw him […]
