The fine is already paid, but I’d be interested to know how many people have received similar citations.

Every week, I chauffeur my mother to our family businesses to pick up deposits, reports, and attend to some regular maintenance. The round trip from home to all our stores and back is roughly 100 miles. This gives me plenty of time to observe the driving tendencies of Houstonians, many of which have inspired me to write this post.

My list of grievances against drivers:

If you’re on a two lane road, please stop taking it upon yourself to cruise right next to a car in the adjacent lane. This makes it impossible for people to overtake you in your 35 mph “comfort zone.”

If you’re the first person to approach an intersection with the intention of going straight, don’t be sitting in the right lane. This makes the driver(s) behind you wait until the next green light before making the right turn on red (RTOR).

This is a BIG one if you’re a female (or some males, heh) – do NOT spend time putting on makeup in the morning traffic. The world knows you need it, but we don’t want you leaving mile long gaps in front of you as you make a pathetic attempt to beautify yourself.

Rubber necking. Enough said.

Stop assuming you have the right-of-way over an eighteen-wheeler or Metro bus. They could easily put your turbo minivan out of its misery.

If you’re driving on the freeway and you’ve just finished that can of Pepsi or a bottle of Ozarka, wait till you get to a quiet road before you throw it out. No, I’m not encouraging that you loiter, but if you’re going to do it, your fellow freeway-goers would appreciate NOT having an aluminum missile come flying at their windshields.

I’ll append more items to this list as I think of them.

Now I ask my readership… what driving habits do you find annoying?

This is for the rubbernecker. The individual who we can count on to always make the irrational decision. The gifted member of society who voluntarily goes out of his/her way to make the rest of our lives miserable. The person whose fascination with other people’s business will likely get them into an accident of their choice. This is for you, humble citizen of utter selfishness.

I never understood rubbernecking. People love accusing others of being nosy, but desiring to take part in an accident scene like it’s a miracle in action is just nonsense. I wonder how those accident victims feel when they see traffic coming to a standstill to take part in making them feel even more miserable. Just for future reference, I may keep a stash of small rocks in my trunk. In the event of an accident, I’ll make the necessary phone calls, and if I witness anyone holding up traffic, their windshields will be laden with tiny cracks. It will be glorious.

But seriously, it’s just another example of how the masses can be so incredibly ignorant together. One person starts it. Then a group of drivers becomes curious. And soon after, a nice little traffic jam has emerged from an accident. To make matters worse, this “phenomenon” can also result in more accidents.

Anyways, that’s the end of my rant. My accolades and sincere sympathy go out to you, rubbernecker, for your continued efforts in making the rest of driving-society a living nightmare. Fear not, you have been noticed; however, for better or worse, you are in the crosshair of many “normal” drivers’ middle fingers and other obscene gestures as they drive by and laugh at your existence. Go out, get a life, and as parody off a fellow blogger’s tagline: “Learn to drive, jerk.”
