PageRank (PR) is a semi-secret algorithm which serves as the foundation for Google’s search engine. To put it crudely, the higher a website’s PR, the more “meaningful” websites reference it via links. While other factors are taken into consideration (ie, the age of the domain and search engine optimizations), link reputation is the dominating component in PR.

Earlier this afternoon while I was replying back to a comment, I noticed that RK.md’s main page was bumped to a PR of 4. I’m incredibly thankful for all those who helped me achieve this milestone by continuing to reference my posts, subscribe to my RSS feed, and follow me on Twitter. Hopefully, each one of you has gained insight from one of my tech walkthroughs, medical writeups, or blurbs about experiences from medical school.

Thank you, thank you, thank you!

HTML5 has been on the horizon for quite some time, but the breadth of Flash-based web applications has continued to expand over the last few years. Apple dealt their first major blow to Flash by not supporting it on their flagship tablet device, the iPad. This caused media giants like Vimeo, ESPN, Time, CBS, and Flickr to offer an HTML5 compatible (and therefore, iPad compatible) format for users.

HTML5 has also proven its media capabilities to be more stable and better at managing resources. For example, YouTube’s HTML5 player uses far less system resources than their traditional Flash player. You can do your own benchmarks by enrolling in the beta (link above) and seeing for yourself.

So without Apple’s support, are Flash’s days numbered? Well there’s one company which has chosen to embrace Flash as well as its own open-source VP8 backend – Google Inc. Not only did Google unveil its plans a few days ago at the Google I/O showcase, but they’re also integrating Flash 10.1 into Android 2.2.

Steve Jobs is right in saying that the majority of web browser crashes on the Mac are due to plugins, namely Flash. However, one cannot deny how prevalent the platform is. Remember all those horrible-looking-yet-ridiculously-addictive arcade games you play on the net? Most of them run Flash. A lot of the animations you see on websites are brought to you by Flash. Most web developers have grown accustomed to coding in programs like Flash MX or Flash Studio Pro. And with Google’s backing, it looks like Flash will be here for a little longer… but not much longer. Even with Google, Flash’s days are numbered.

Personally, I think Google should make a deal with Adobe and just buy out Flash.

Also, if you’ve not done so already, read Steve Job’s thoughts on Flash.

You love Google. I love Google. We all love Google. Even you, Mr. Executive of Yahoo, have secretly Googled something in your free time. It’s a company rooted in innovation and open source projects. Not to mention, their robust network blankets the world with ridiculously fast search results. I decided to use their servers as a content distribution network to power this site across the Internet.

Andreas Krohn at Digitalistic wrote a fantastic article regarding how to do just this. Using Google’s AppEngine utility (currently in beta testing), users are able to publish files to Google. Since these files can be referenced via a static link, this service can be used to distribute website content (cascading style sheets, images, etc.) to users. In principle, content distribution networks have many outlets throughout the world. Therefore, users from virtually any country will always be “near” the host site, whether they live in Asia, Europe, or America (in this case, wherever Google servers operate).

What’s the whole point of doing this? Well, besides impressing the ladies, it basically speeds up the website a few notches. That’s why I did it. In my pursuit of a simplistic and fast website, I thought that a CDN would be something I could implement to a.) learn something, and b.) accomplish the aforementioned goal.
