RK-home’s New Layout

I’ve decided to depart with my old layout, a theme based on the original Hemingway design, since virtually no development is going into it anymore. Instead, I’ve jumped on the mainstream bandwagon and started recoding the K2 framework to suit my needs. This also works out great since the new version of WordPress (2.7) should be released very, very soon.

I’m well aware of the fact that there are numerous issues throughout the site. These range from the relatively simple “hey Rishi, this box isn’t aligned properly” to the more interesting (and rather funny) “hey Rishi, this link is hanging off the page, and it disappears whenever I click it.” Bare with me.

However, why would I write a post stating the obvious change in my site’s layout? Well, since I’m in the process of coding a lot of stuff, this is the time to let me know what you’d like to see added to the site. Aside from the content of my blogs and pages, what else do you think will make this site more thoroughly interesting to you – a valued reader. Leave me a comment! Oscar can vouch for the fact that his two suggestions (adding some medical pictures and having the option to edit your comment) were incorporated relatively quickly upon letting me know.

What do you want to see? 🙂

  1. Ah, ok. I see what you mean. Five minutes is good enough time to edit. I did open my WordPress and Twitter accounts some months ago but I found I had to play with them a lot to understand their true power, particularly WordPress. In the next couple of months I will likely embark on the journey of making my own website with the blogging and stuff, so I will probably be asking you questions. Like how to start. 😉
I already ordered the mini, too. 😀

  2. What happened to the “edit” your comment feature? =(
Oh, and how about a hyperlink from the “top commentators”? So a person can easily check out what other commentators wrote.
Oh, and how about being able to comment on your status?

    • Those are some great points, Oscar. Since I wrote this post, I upgraded to a newer version of WordPress, and in the process, the edit comment feature became obsolete. I never got a chance to implement the new function, but I just did. What do you think? There’s a five minute window for one to edit his/her comment after it has been posted. 🙂

The top commentators list is actually a plugin, and it’s really not feasible for me to display all the comments of each person on that list, since they would span multiple posts. The “recent comments” entries do link to the individual post where the comment was left.

And commenting on my status… well… why don’t you just get Twitter? Become part of the ever-growing world of free microblogging. 😉

  3. Rishi, you know what? Some people may not have the time to look through this site to find your email quickly and thus, have to go to OCS or Facebook to email you. Maybe having a “Contact Me” in the menu might work. I’m sure this will keep comments from deviating from the main idea of your blogs, and if people have blog suggestions, they can just email quickly. Just some food for thought.

  4. Fantastic suggestion, Oscar. I’m actually in the process of changing my website’s domain name to something far more relevant to my future line of work, but I’ll incorporate that suggestion as soon as I’m done. Navigation is a major concern of mine, so I appreciate you bringing this up! 🙂

  5. So, I win! Haha. Just kidding, Rizwana! 🙂
Kudos for Oscar! And I can bring a date, because 3 is kind of weird and stuff. I always date the prettiest girls. Give me some time to think of other stuff fo your site, I am swamped with school work. I cannot believe people still use dial-up for internet. Wow. I guess you must be going for a unique site that conveys both the seriousness of a medical student and the humor and allure to intellectual exchange of ideas and thoughts.

  6. Lol, some web developers are into flashy colors and animations, others are into strict simplicity, and I’m into optimized minimalism. We all have our styles. 😉

  7. Well, for now, when a random visitor views a post, they’ll be able to see which comment is the “best” by looking at the score. I’m currently putting together something for the right-hand sidebar which will collect the “top comments.”

  8. Unfortunately, it’s not feasible for me to host games related to medicine because a.) there aren’t that many to begin with and b.) about 40% of my viewers are on a dialup connection. I have incorporated Oscar’s “comment rate” system, since this didn’t compromise the site’s bandwidth footprint significantly.

  9. Lol…actually, I know this is weird, but I’m not a big fan of hanging out with “couples.” My cousins traumatized and tortured me ever since I was little. And by this I mean, smothered each other with PDA, etc, so I get, well queasy. Lol

But, maybe you can add medicine related games to your site, and users can “challenge” each other. Lol…I would do that! Since, I am free!

  10. I vouch for the fact that Rishi does improve his site quickly whenever adequate suggestions are brought to his attention. Something I was thinking was, each friend register with a mini-profile and a picture. I tried the gravatar but I guess I need to play with it some more as the pic doesn’t post to my comments. Also, you should reward best comments to you blogs like Honor Rolls, because that was the only reason I ever tried to do well in school. Similar to Yahoo answers, where the person posting a comment or question gets to pick the best response. These award points should add up at the end of the month, and you would have to hang out with the winner and/or other friends at Cheesecake Factory, Galleria, the movies, etc., for one-on-one discussions. I’m sure Rizwana would love hanging out with you. LOL. I just know how bored you must be, with no school. 🙂

  11. Ahahaha, nice Oscar! Great suggestion! With regards to the gravatar, are you sure the e-mail you use to post comments is the exact same as the e-mail you registered with gravatar?
