Baylor Med’s curriculum basically entails students covering the human body in its “normal state” during the first year and then going back through the organ systems’ pathological states in the six months of pre-clinicals as an MS2. This August, we’re covering cardiology and hematology/oncology as part of block 7a’s coursework. I’m also taking a pharmacology elective on Friday afternoons which should help on the end of basic sciences exam as well as the USMLE Step I.
This afternoon, I realized how much I missed my classmates during summer break. Who else will laugh (let alone understand) lame medical jokes? It’s sort of depressing to think that I only have six months left with these amazing people together in a single auditorium, so I better make the most of it.
The MS1s are also a great group! Baylor Med is lucky to have these students who come from such a vast array of backgrounds and seem incredibly motivated to uphold our reputation as a top notch medical institution. I just hope they make the most of the many opportunities which I passed up as an MS1 myself.
I’m on the home stretch of piecing together their white coat ceremony next Friday. Lots of people to e-mail and call… quite a few visits to the venue… but everything’s shaping up to be awesome. Not bad for a ceremony held on Friday the 13th. 😉

So I was looking through the BCM brochure they sent (as a tease!!) and going through the curriculum. I know medical school is hard dont get me wrong but anatomy, physiology, cell bio AND biochemistry in 6 weeks?!?! Can you please explain how that’s possible and what sort of depth you’re taught in that time. Thanks!!!
Because we have an integrated approach to the basic sciences, we tend to cover a lot of stuff in each block. For example, in block 2, when you’re learning about the electrophysiology of the heart muscle’s contraction in lecture, you’re looking at cardiomyocytes in histology, exploring the heart in gross anatomy, etc. You don’t do all that stuff in six weeks. You do it for more like six months as you go through each organ system (blocks 1-3).
I know there are a lot of questions regarding Baylor Med’s curriculum, but based on our board scores and the fact that the 18 month basic sciences curriculum has been around at BCM for decades, it really works! Please feel free to e-mail me with more questions!
