The Perception Of Cuteness

It’s fair to say that most people consider newborn babies to be exceptionally cute… but why is that? Today on rounds my neonatology attending explained the human psyche’s perception of what is “adorable.”

Large eyes, symmetric facial features, a small nose and mouth, and other infantile physical findings are ingrained into our definition of cuteness. If we extrapolate that to women who are *blessed* to look ten years younger, it makes sense why these are often the Hollywood actresses and billboard models the media loves to advertise.

Even among children, those who have certain genetic diseases like osteogenesis imperfecta are often cute beyond their years of infancy – they have the appealing infantile features while also being able to communicate.

The problem is when the babies know they’re cute. 😉
