Preparing For My First Fellowship Interview

The farther I get in my training, the less anxious I feel about interviews. A little eustress is healthy and shows that the interview trail is indeed very important, but most of the typical, scripted interview answers of undergraduate days have been replaced by life experience.

Why do I want to do critical care and cardiothoracic anesthesiology? What are my greatest strengths and weaknesses? Where do I see myself in the future? I don’t have to think about my answers – I’ve experienced them each day by working in our healthcare system, caring for patients, teaching, and learning. It’s time to sit down and share my enthusiasm with admissions committees around the country.

I’m kicking off my critical care fellowship interviews tomorrow! Fortunately, the first program is just down the road, so I won’t have to worry about travel, lodging, etc. Here’s hoping for a great start! 🙂

  1. Good luck with your fellowship interviews. Any advice to an IMG aiming on Anesthesiology ? What would be the best strategy in tern of prelim, transitional or Categorical spots ?

    Thank you so much

    • Hi there! I’ll reference a post I wrote earlier about tips for the application process: link to post

You’ll definitely want to apply (and interview at) a LOT of programs. You should also consider both categorical programs and advanced programs (which will require you to also apply to separate prelim years). This will give you more options as far as matching.
