This is a momentous day for web developers and the Internet at large – PHP 7 has been released! 🙂
PHP 5 was originally released in summer 2004, and since then, there was little paradigm shift in this incredibly prevalent scripting language. PHP 7 brings new features including significant speed improvements, removal of old SAPIs, the “spaceship” operator (<=>), revision of Exceptions, and overall less memory usage.
And wow… just wow. I’ve been using the beta and release candidates of PHP 7 for months on my WordPress sites with a noticeable improvement and no major compatability issues. In fact, the folks over at WordPress have already committed to supporting this version of PHP.
I’m hoping to have more time to dive into the details of PHP 7 over my vacation this month. 🙂
