Nexus 6P and Pixel C On Android N Developer Preview 3 – File Based Encryption

Google I/O 2016’s keynote was yesterday, and while it was fairly light in announcing immediately available updates/products, there are some great things in the pipeline! I’ve been running Android N Developer Preview 3 on my Nexus 6P and Pixel C devices for the last day (with file-based encryption enabled), and I can vouch for its stability! Definitely much more “daily-driver-worthy” compared to previews 1 and especially 2. Love where productivity and performance are heading with the world’s #1 mobile platform. 🙂

Despite the announcements of Google Assistant, Google Home, Instant Apps, Android Wear 2.0, and the incredible advances Google continues to make in machine learning, I was disappointed with the lack of a unified messenger. Google announced a WhatsApp equivalent called Allo (to be released this summer) alongside Duo (a video chatting companion app to Allo), but didn’t even mention Hangouts, Messenger, or Google Voice.

I’m all for choice, but the Android community will benefit from a unified, encrypted messenger (akin to iMessage on iOS) with the versatility of WhatsApp combined with encrypted video chatting, a simple yet beautiful interface, built in Google Assistant, integrated Google Voice and a few surprises here and there. We’ll see how Allo/Duo and Hangouts gel together once it is released.

So the point of this post: if you’re a little adventurous want your Nexus 5X, Nexus 6, Nexus 6P, Nexus 9, Nexus Player, Pixel C, or Sony Xperia Z3 to be on the cutting edge, back up your phone and enroll in the Android N preview program. 🙂
