I routinely receive messages from pre-health professions students seeking to enter healthcare because they want to "save lives." In reality, healthcare providers rarely save lives in the hyperacute setting. Hippocrates, the father of medicine, also recognized this fact. Many of the most critical patients who are at an imminent risk for death either succumb to their illness or survive with significant deficits. It's important that we are trained to recognize these life threatening problems and offer interventions appropriately; however, future trainees and current healthcare providers alike should shift our attention towards PROMOTING WELLNESS AND COMFORT, facets of healthcare that we can offer ALL patients regardless of their clinical situation. What are your thoughts on the idea of healthcare providers "saving lives?" More to follow on IG Live tonight at 8pm EST.
