My homelab has gradually evolved into infrastructure I rely on every day. VPN access, dashboards, containers, AI workloads, monitoring, and remote services all quietly sit behind the scenes, powering my life. Unfortunately, when the Internet drops, the entire ecosystem feels broken.

To add some redundancy, I just installed the UniFi 5G Backup alongside my UniFi network. The device was adopted directly into UniFi, updated automatically, and immediately became a cellular WAN failover connection for my rack. I inserted a SIM card from Computers 4 People Shield Internet (referral link), which offers unlimited 5G service for roughly $150/year. For a homelab backup connection, that is honestly difficult to beat.
The goal here isn’t to replace my fiber Internet connection with blazing fast 5G – it’s to preserve continuity. If my primary ISP fails, I still want Tailscale, SSH, monitoring, remote access, and critical services to remain online. Graceful degradation matters more than perfect uptime.
As my homelab becomes increasingly integrated into my daily workflows, Internet redundancy is another layer of infrastructure reliability.
So uh… I’m looking forward to my first Internet outage so I can put the thing to use! 🤣
