Too Many Mobile Messaging Choices!

The number of mobile messaging client options is ridiculous! On any given day, I’ll send and receive messages on:

  • SMS/MMS
  • Google Hangouts
  • GroupMe
  • Facebook Messenger
  • Skype
  • WhatsApp
  • Google Voice

WhatsApp is honestly my favorite. It’s tied to my phone number, cross-platform compatible, reliable, and provides end-to-end encryption. The big drawback: no video conferencing (yet). This feature is offered by Hangouts, Skype, and Facebook Messenger, but those platforms lack the encryption and require additional accounts.

Google is set to debut Allo and Duo, a pair of applications which might unify some of the apps above (namely Hangouts, SMS/MMS, and Voice), but till then, I’m still trying to streamline this problem which has long plagued Android users. ?

How do you balance so many options in the mobile messaging market?
