The WATCHMAN FLX™ Pro left atrial appendage (LAA) closure device is implanted percutaneously via the femoral vein → right atrium → a transseptal puncture → left atrium pathway to seal the LAA – a small pouch in the left heart where blood clots can form and potentially lead to strokes in patients with atrial arrhythmias like atrial fibrillation (AFib). Multiple clinical trials have demonstrated that the WATCHMAN device can significantly reduce the risk of ischemic stroke and systemic embolism in patients with AFib while reducing the long-term bleeding risks associated with anticoagulants like warfarin.

Compared to its predecessor, the FLX Pro model has a more flexible frame, permitting a better anatomical fit and reducing the risk of peridevice leaks. Its fully rounded design also minimizes the risk of thrombus formation post-implantation, a known complication in earlier devices.
I work with our cardiologists and sonographers to provide general anesthesia and transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) guidance when these devices are placed. In conjunction with real-time fluoroscopy (and help from the reps!), we determine the appropriate device size, position it carefully in the LAA, and ensure it is appropriately blocked. These procedures are relatively short but satisfying from an imaging standpoint… especially since I love interventional TEE! ☺️
