Med School App Mistakes

0

From freshman year, I’ve constantly heard the “early applicants get the early seats” mantra, and vowed that when my time came, I would finish my applications to TMDSAS and AMCAS as early as humanly possible. TMDSAS opened on May 1st; however, my MCAT scores were posted online on May 19th. This is where my laziness began.

Frustrated Doctors

1

We all know that the medical profession is filled with many frustrating intricacies for both the patient and doctor; however, after reading a New York Times article regarding the issue, I was blown away by some statistics and testimonials. “Hard work” is a phrase routinely used in conversation when describing arduous tasks or professions, but I really feel bad for both the current and aspiring physicians out there who are regularly faced with ridiculous non-clinical tasks.

To 3G Or Not To 3G

Apple CEO Steve Jobs gave his highly anticipated keynote address at the World Wide Developer Conference 2008 on Monday morning. Donning his typical “keynote attire” consisting of a black turtleneck and jeans, he satisfied the primary expectation of the audience – a 3G iPhone.

Alternative Energy

To anyone who plans on pursuing petroleum engineering or anything even remotely related to the oil industry, prepare yourself for a nice bashing. The petroleum industry will only exist in the shadows of larger alternative energy companies in the next century. For the sake of maintaining the environment, society will eventually look down upon oil. It’s almost sad for me to think about our brilliant society, consisting of an incredible amount of technology and brain-power at its disposal, still cannot create a feasible alternative energy source. We’re burning dead, organic matter. Over and over and over again… non-stop.

Personalized Medicine – Are We Too Smart?

Dr. Francis Collins, leader of the Human Genome Project and director of the National Human Genome Research Institute, resigned from his position as director a few days ago leaving behind a noteworthy legacy for any scientist. Having seen the completion of the Human Genome Project, applying the findings towards personalized medicine, and recently ensuring legislation regarding anti-discriminatory acts against the contents of a person’s genetic predisposition towards certain diseases (based on their genome), Collins’ career was exceptional. As many of you know, my career goal is medicine, more specifically, that of a neurosurgeon; therefore, my thoughts regarding Collins’ extensive work deals with personalized medicine.

OWC Macbook Memory Upgrade

So I received my memory from Other World Computing this morning, and was eager to plop it into my Macbook as soon as possible. I must say from start to finish, this $100 project was well worth the money, time, and labor.

So I finally finished my TMDSAS application last week, and submitted it on Friday. Fortunately, my transcript was already received, and hopefully my application fee, photos, and certification page will all be in Austin by tomorrow. Now I’m waiting for the health professions committee to compile my recommendation letter and send it off. So the verdict – I’m an “early” applicant. =). Unfortunately, UT Southwestern’s secondary application is currently offline due to some technical difficulties, but hopefully that’ll be resolved really soon.

20th Birthday

0

Upon completing two decades of life, I’ve reassured myself of one concept that I continue to hold dear — friendship. Thanks to everyone who acknowledged me on my birthday: for the party, for the gifts, and most importantly, for the memories of the past year. I’m better for having each one of you in my life, and I hope you can take this message as a simple token of my gratitude for making this birthday one to remember! Thank you! :-)
